Whew. Maybe it's just because I slacked off for a couple days, but the last couple days of contracts seem to be a bit more exhausting than usual. I heard that they've got a new subsection of contracts for new mercs to break their teeth on, but if you ask me it seems like a number of veteran mercs could probably stand to head back to school too. With that said, I'll admit that I was more than surprised when a few newer looking mercs came up asking me for some help on not sucking quite as much on the battlefield. It took me a minute, but here was some of the stuff I told them. If...not in quite so many words...
1. Tactics: Short of a dropship or tank or something else that has an ungodly amount of armor, equipment is secondary to what each mercenary really needs, and that's a goddamned brain. I have killed, so, so many people who weren't expecting simple maneuvers such as flanking or an ambush, to say nothing of squads that can actually work together. The point I'm trying to make is that while the quality of your weaponry and gear is important, what's a far greater guarantee of victory is the ability to outthink your opponents, which isn't half as hard as most people might think. On that note...
2. Roles: In any given battle, there are certain roles each person is going to fill. I know we all like to imagine ourselves tearing through the battlefield like a hero from one of those E-comics, but the truth of the matter is that we're probably just going to be doing one or two things per battle. If you want to best contribute to your team, try and figure out exactly what your side is missing. Perhaps they need someone with a repair tool, or maybe they're lacking on supplies? Maybe they need someone to help spearhead the frontline assault (though I rather doubt it, but it's possible), the important thing is to find out where you're most needed and do what needs to be done. It isn't always the most glamorous or exciting job, but I can't begin to tell you how many times I've ensured that my team wasn't caught in a pincer attack by sticking behind everyone and keeping a control point from being taken. Speaking of location...
3. Location.Location.Location: Keeping a clear head in the warzone can be tricky sometimes, I know. You're all pumped full of adrenaline, you just somehow managed to wipe out an ambush on your own, and all in all you feel powerful. Great. But don't forget where you are relative to your teammates and the enemy. A good merc can ensure that they're always on the higher ground (usually literally) to their enemies position, but it can me a great deal in regards to defense as well. If you're a sniper, consider how long it would take for a random merc to make their way up to you. If you set up a spawn point with a nanohive, keep it fairly close to the front line, but with enough defense that the enemy won't be able to access easily access it. Even if you're just random joe merc with an assault rifle, you need to know which possible angles enemies could come at you from, otherwise you're liable to be shot in the back of the head.
Anyway, there's....loads more that I told them, but I've been planning something for a while that I really need to fill out the paperwork on, so I'm gonna say adieu for now Diary, but I think you'll enjoy my next entry even more.
