Today was a bit of an interesting day. Only one battle, which was a complete and total mess. It was though the idea of tactics, coordination, or even simple cooperation was completely overwhelmed by the idea of "HURFF DURFF SHOOT DA PEOPLE", to an embarrassing degree. Luckily, I was on the opposite side and we cleaned up the battlefield like we were the goddamned Jovian Empire against the Amarr. It was rather refreshing if I'm being honest; as it seems that more often than not, I'm on the other side of such a massacre. That single battle got me thinking about mercs on the battlefield and the balance between skill with our weaponry and the tactics we use.
The sheer disregard for anything resembling tactics or maneuvers on the opposing side made me ponder about the idea of coordination in general. Our ability to simply hop out of a pod after each and every death means that quantities of soldiers aren't -quite- as important as they used to be, though the limited number of clones brought to each engagement means that they are still a factor. Tactics on a wider scale seem to be limited to corporations that have a strong bond than a lot of normal ones, and failing those, then you've just got them on the level of individual mercs and squads. On a personal level, you got people like me who seize the initiative and do things like flanking, ambushes, and laying down suppressive fire. Handy, but odds are I'm not single-handedly turning the tide of any battles unless it's a very close stalemate and the other side is too retarded to have someone else using the same tactics I am. On a higher scale, you've also got squads who (theoretically) coordinate across maps, which is useful in all sorts of ways. Need some support for a vehicle? Radio it in. Need guards to keep an anti-air point from being overtaken? Same thing. A competent, adaptable six-man squad could very possibly be more terrifying than a trio of tank....assuming that you could get them all to cooperate.
Then you've got those district battles, which, given that they have a lot more on the line than regular contracts, I like to imagine could be done with at least some strategizing. Issuing orders to squads, giving them all various objectives such as suppressive fire, anti-armor, logi troops keeping the infantry in the black on ammo as well as dumping down respawn points to keep them on the front lines, there are all sorts of different niches for a soldier to fill. Admittedly, I've never been to such a battle so it's hard for me to say if my ideas are far-fetched or the nor-well....Okay, they probably aren't the norm, what with three-quarters of mercs seeming to have the all the intelligence of the average Amarr citizen, but I do like to imagine the battles being played out between two commanders, each relying on a mixture of their own tactics and the ability of their troops to seize victory.
It's...probably really naive, I know. But from a tactical standpoint it just sounds so.freaking.cool! On the odd days where I dream and it isn't about my freakouts, I'll sometimes see myself looking over a visual map of a battlefield, issuing orders down to troops in the field and ordering things like support drops and anti-armor batteries to be sent down when the time is right, absolutely destroying enemies that don't have my tactical prowess backing them up. Ah...Maybe someday. But for now, it's just me and my flanking, laying down respawn points and ambushing enemy mercs too stupid to look at their radar and realize I'm right on top of them.
